#6 - the cabin
One of my favourite memories from the last 10 years is heading to one of my oldest and best friends families cabin in Manning Park. Its the perfect summer getaway, especially for someone like me who absolutely hates camping/sleeping outdoors but loves visiting nature. It only takes about 2.5 hours to drive to the cabin and its the perfect oasis from the city.
We found ourselves there every summer consecutively for 7 years. The cabin grew on us as much as we grew in our time there. It's quite something to have a place to revisit year after year, a place that gives you the opportunity to reflect on how you've grown from the last time you were there.
Some favourite memories include investigating bear poo that showed up a little too close to the cabin, wondering what we'd do if the bear showed up near our doorstep, blowing the lid off the bar-b-que while lighting it, endless games of Racko (a german card game), saying goodnight to the billy goat hung on the wall, waking up to Daniela playing Yani tapes every morning, amazing meals cooked together, a bat that surprised us by flying in the door one night and life talks that went on into the night. I remember staring up at the night sky with absolutely no light pollution nearby to dull the incredible sight of glowing stars. It was incomparable to anything I had ever seen before.
One year Daniela, Shirin and I wrote a list capturing our dreams, plans for our futures and predications about each others futures. We hid the list inside the cabin thinking it would never get found and eventually trying to recall what we had said about each others futures and our own dreams. Its heart warming to think that a piece of us is captured in time in a place that watched us become the bold, articulate and beautiful women we had always been inside but spent all those years searching for the strength to uncover.
